There has always been mixed feelings about the topic because some do not see the harm in accidental use, but people who even accidentally use it get the same punishment as someone who intentionally plagiarize. It is even considered plagiarism to quote or use your own work in future projects that you may work on.
Out of the three articles, I think the Jonah Lehrer case is the most objectionable. While it is never alright to steal another person’s work, it is a completely unique thing to make up sham statements to use in a book about somebody’s life.
